PHP date functions... aah i see... my first guess was a joomla function/variable or a module. Thanks for clearing this up.

What about localization? I am a "dumb german", so i would need the date output in german. Is it all handled by the server?

I'm getting a "'this.element'is null or is not an object" error in internet explorer (firefox is OK). Row 8, sign 2.
I guess this is a java script error. Please help.

You are not using some of pre defined modules like the weather module and search. In internet explorer 6 it display an error because the javascript code is null.

You can just delete the javascript link on index.php file. The corresponding file is /templates/it_newsy/js/IceScript.js.
