This makes NO sense - really odd:

If you take the sample text out of a slideshow document:

and replace it with different text - same HTML:

<p><img src="images/icetheme/iceslideshow/moorer.jpg" border="0" alt="Allison Moorer" /></p>
<p>Moorer's latest release redefines her style</p>
<hr id="system-readmore" />

the intro paragraph doesn't show - just the article headline, and the proper photo.

Nope - copied and pasted, and no difference. Very strange stuff... Inexplicable...

Even odder - I copied and pasted the code and text directly from one of the working panes, unchanged from the first <p> right on through the readmore, and the copy doesn't work, while the original still does.

Is there some place Other than the content page I should be making changes?

I will discuss this with Alvin when i meet him again if this module shold be considered a rewrite to allow easiser usage of it.
